Capturing Timeless Visual Poetry: The Mindful Photography Journey of Yannis LobainaAs a photographer, I capture fleeting moments and Mother Nature's sacred geometry through my lens, transforming them into beautiful, timeless visual poetry. My work explores patterns, pareidolia (the phenomenon of seeing faces in nature), spirals, textures, and the spiritual significance of these magical encounters with the natural world. I have always been fascinated by the non-human realm. One of my pieces, "Ode to the Red Squirrel," reflects the non-human experiences of grief, joy, and hope found in nature. This encounter reminds us that we are all part of nature and deserve respect and time to heal our grief. For me, walking with my camera is a daily, conscious form of meditation. I have developed several photographic series around this theme, all centred on slowing down, observing, being patient, enjoying the present moment, and listening to Mother Nature. She is our home for healing and renewal. My ongoing series, "Catch and Release," represents my spiritual journey as an immigrant artist and mother. It is about savouring moments, observing, and letting go. I invite viewers to pause and honour each instance, reflecting on our relationship with the environment and connection to Mother Nature.

Yannis Lobaina is an award-winning Cuban-Canadian artist, author, filmmaker, photographer, and arts-based workshop facilitator based in Toronto. Yannis' writing is deeply impacted by her multiethnic identity as a multilingual person, woman of colour, mother and immigrant; recently she has published short stories, poetry and creative non-fiction stories exploring themes of immigration, language, and motherhood. As a photographer, Yannis specializes in minimalist photographic storytelling, capturing ephemeral landscapes, patterns, and pareidolias (faces) in Mother Nature. She firmly believes that the arts can be a powerful tool for social change and peace-making. Since 2016, she has developed bilingual (Spanish-English) community-based art programs for children and families around Toronto. Through her creative pursuits, Yannis explores themes of immigration, diaspora, language, and motherhood, making her work deeply personal and relatable to all.
